Business Rekeying After Staff Changes and Lost Keys

Rekey your business locks any time you cannot say where every key is. Rekeying makes every old key useless and gives you a fresh set, and the locks stay on the doors.

Six Moments That Call for a Rekey

Each moment and what to do
What HappenedWhat to Do
An employee leaves with a keyTreat it as lost. Rekey the doors that key opened, and the cash room first.
A key is lost or stolenDo not wait to see if it turns up. Rekey those doors.
You sign a new leaseRekey on day one, after you read your lease for any rule about changing locks.
A break in or an attemptForced locks may need replacing, and keys on other doors are still a risk.
A contractor or cleaner is doneCollect the keys. If they did not all come back, rekey.
Nobody knows who holds whatRekey and start a written chart for the whole building.

Rekey or Replace

A rekey changes the pins inside the cylinder, so it changes what key fits. The hardware on the door stays. A tired lock or a failed latch needs replacing, but a good lock with a lost key only needs a rekey. A rekey is also the best moment to set up a master key plan or restricted keys, and to start a written chart of who holds what.

What It Costs

Housecall Pro listed a rekey at $50 to $130 per lock in its August 2026 guide. That is a national range and not our quote. Tell us your door count, and we will give you the price first.
